OK, I downloaded CDParanoia, gunzipped, unTar'd, ran configure, make all
and make install. When I try to run it I get an error message:

cdparanoia: Can't load library libcdda_interface.so.0

Looked in /usr/local/lib and found two libraries, four links. Deleted the
links and placed copies of the appropriate library files in their place.

cdparanoia: Can't load library libcdda_interface.so.0

Re-ran configure, make and install several times. Even tried running it
while logged in as root. This does not appear to be a setup or configuration
problem; it seems to think the library file is corrupted. No mention of
similar errors in FAQ, troubleshooting, or mailing list archives. AAARRGGHH!!
  Linux kernel version 2.0.35 on a P5-166/MMX, 32MB RAM, 8GB IDE.

I also ran into the "install -p" problem discussed here. Deleting the "-p"
made it run, but what the devil IS "-p"?? Nobody here mentioned it so I
checked the man pages on both Linux and Solaris 2.5, the Unix administration
"armadillo" book, 2 different Linux books, and NONE of 'em mention a "-p"
option for install(1)!
