[paranoia] cdparanoia fails to open CD

That is not entirely true.
I have a Slackware 7.0 distro, with kernel 2.2.13. I used cdparanoia 8 (v. old) because it was the only version to hand at the time. I have the standard SCSI emulation for IDE drives set up, and the operation worked fine.
