[paranoia-dev] Setting up development environment for cdparanoia

Hello, and I must first apologize, if my question is somewhat stupid,
as I am a newcomer in this group ...

Yesterday I started to explore the cdparanoia-III-alpha9.8 source code,
to get a better view what is actually happening in a ripping attempt,
I placed some debug messages to "cooked_interface.c" and
"scsi_interface.c", and configured as follows (the source code was
unzipped as $HOME/src/cdparanoia-III-alpha9.8/ and pwd was $HOME/src
that time).

  ./configure --prefix=$HOME/src/test &&
  make &&
  make install

This of course put the compiled binaries and libraries to
$HOME/src/test/... , so the next thing was to execute the modified
cdparanoia

  $HOME/src/test/bin/cdparanoia <arguments>

My changes did not appear, although I am sure, I patched for example the
only two (?) places in the code, where the messages

"Could not find any audio tracks on this disk."

are spit to screen, so I am pretty sure about this. A possible scenario
that I have for this problem is, that as I have (of course) previously
installed CDParanoia to /usr/... area, the compilation might hardwire
itself to the precompiled libraries rather than my altered source code.

How can this be fixed?

Someone reading this mailing list may ask, why I have become so interested
in CDParanoia's source code, and the short answer is
"Plextor Plexwriter 48/24/48A + Cactus Data Shield". I have bought a few
discs which have this type of copy protection, and my experiments have
been that ripping attempts with

  CDParanoia + LG CD/DVD succeeds

CDParanoia + Plextor FAILS <=== (I'm interested why)

  Plextools + Plextor succeeds

The success Pt+Pl -success occurs when I check the box "Enable single
session" in Plextools in my Micro$oft Windows, and this suggests that the
ripping is possible if software is error-tolerant enough. So I just wanted
to explore, how exactly CDParanoia does fail this attempt, and is there
any easy way to patch it. I am not currently aware of current
development status of CDParanoia IV, so I would be interested if a RO
access to CVS would be implemented soon. BTW, has this issue come up
before?

<p>Thanks in advance,

Mikko Nummelin
