Mike and I talked about this on IRC a bit. He mentioned that from 
experience, no one is willing to parse XML properly to do stream 
identification. So I think this is just an argument that using the
XML methods to identify the stream type is considered too heavy a 
burden, and the alternative of having to hard code a magic for
each XML stream type is therefore preferable.
