sounds like an regression to me.
This bug appeared in mpd quite some time ago and was supposedly fixed.

mpd doesn't have a good record in terms of icecast2 support.
Last thing I've heard quite often was that streams generated by mpd and sent
to an icecast2 server made listener clients stop on song change.

still mpd is a very nice source client - once you get it working.
