There's a realplayer plugin (I know you didn't ask for that, but you did say
that most of your listeners have realplayer) available, I don't know how good
it is w.r.t. things like streaming, I'll see if I can find out more.
I know more people that use realplayer than use WMP as their primary music
player (on the other hand, that's 1 vs. 0 out of a sample size of several
dozen... which suggests that the people I know aren't entirely typical).
Since the directshow filters are closed source, we can't help with them at all
(I don't think any of the developers ever claimed they had any ability to
receive streams - though I suspect if they don't it's just a bug).
