[icecast] Streaming Winamp to Icecast - can't seem to connect?

Hi,
newbie here....

I have SAM+Winamp set up and streaming ok to Shoutcast and Live365, but have
set up an icecast server on a FreeBSD box here - compiled ok and seems to
run ok. Well, It shows its running in logs and so on. althought the compile
didn't want to know about -pthreads -
Anyway, connecting to the stream with http://ip:port with Winamp - nothing?

I'm pretty sure I have the conf file set up ok and all that.
Without going into sending all that detail - is there something obvious I
need to do other than compile icecast, install it, configure it, then stream
to that port with SAM+Winamp?
