[Icecast-dev] query reg. streaming protocol

Hi,

I am planning to guide Engineering Students
in implementing a MP3 Streaming Server
as part of their academic Project.

I downloaded icecast 2.0.2 & ices 0.4, and
went through the documentation & code.

I am not able to find any resources for understanding
the protocol between Icecast server & Client
(Winamp or XMMS). 
This would help me to guide the students to 
build a streaming server on their own, & demonstrating
with Commercially available client.

Please provide reference to any technical
material for this server-client streaming protocol.
