If your files are that important, then you should make a complete  
backup before you change anything.  After you have a backup, you can  
learn how to use the command line without worrying about mistakes.   
For that matter, copy a subset of your old files to a new directory,  
and try some of the commands.

I wish I could say that I understand this.
Any chance someone could provide a bit more basic instructions?
I know, what a PITA n00b!
Sorry, but I've rarely worked with command line syntax and I don't  
want to hose up my carefully ripped files.
Anyone?
