FYI, libtool 1.4b has a (different) fix for this problem. I haven't studied
the diffs enough to try to extract that particular change, and I don't think
it's worth it since the above workaround fixes things, and hopefully there will
be a new stable libtool release soon, since 1.4 has this (IMHO serious) bug.
