As you may know, Adir Abraham is interested in working on a bit of
this optimization, and just applied to the program; we could use more
hands working on these problems.
We are planning to ship only open formats, and would love to be able
to recommend that schools use the same, but right now it may be too
difficult for some. We could use help with conversions to/from
theora/vorbis/speex (perhaps a better public service to do this for
those without tools), testing of speed and picking the right encoding
settings (something we're just now working out for raw audio), and
setting up/testing streaming from our school servers.
