I made some brief test and IMHO lossless stereo still starts at 5.0. I
can easily hear the difference between 4.99 and 5.0 with some type of
sound and there is a bit rate jump of about 10%. btw I couldn't find
where in the sources it choose the coupling method... hmm probably
there aren't discrete coupling methods anymore. I think online docs
are a bit outdated.

It mostly depends on what kind of sound you're making the tests... and
use at least mid-quality headphones, not that crappy self-powered
plastic speakers you can buy in computer shops.
