Compiling from source works pretty well. You need to get the following 
from downloads.xiph.org/releases/ :

libogg
libvorbis
libao
vorbis-tools

tar xvzf each one in order, cd to the directory, and run './configure && 
make' followed by 'sudo make install'.

If you don't care about playback, it may work to skip installing libao.
