If you want you can use an Xbox with Xbox Media Center on it. XBMC is
not the Microsoft "media extender" program, it is open source. You can
get custom Xboxes with LCD screens on the front, plus it will play DVDs,
Quicktime, Windows Media, Real, Mpeg-1, Divx, Xvid, you name it.
Basically all the Mplayer codecs and then some. It will also play any
audio codec as well. It really is very good software. It will stream
from Windows, Mac, or Linux as well. It will also play Xbox games too
;). You can add a wireless adapter if you don't have wire to the
location you'd be using it. It will also use the stock Xbox DVD remote
if memory serves me right, or maybe even a wireless mouse and keyboard.

There are some companies you can buy premodded Xboxes like this with the
LCD Screen, and the ability to run non-Microsoft code if you prefer.
