A build of a distribution tarball shouldn't have to run any of the
autoconf/automake/aclocal/autoheader/libtool stuff. Were any of the
timestamps on the files messed up after extraction? Or is this a
CVS pull?

It's either automake or libtool; the two are joined at the crotch.
If tu_kd can't run the autogen.sh stuff on the Amiga, then as a
workaround perhaps he/she could do the autogen.sh stuff on a Linux
or Unix system, then move the whole tree over to the target platform.
I've had to do this a few times, letting my Debian system run
autogen.sh for a program that my OpenBSD system's tools couldn't
handle.
