He-he, it is indeed irritating when in the middle of an exam, the
bored lecturer/TA starts his laptop but forgets to turn off the
speaker, so in the middle of solving some question you hear the M$
sound...  This happended suspiciously regularly on my last several
exams :-(.

I meant it for my home computer, not some office.  For some time I
used my computer as a music box for most of the day.  So I worked
mostly with the screen off.  I learnt winamp's keys and could even
navigate the load playlist dialog blindly :-).  So I wanted to know
when the computer is already up and a startup sound (no, not the M$
one ;) was handy - until I put my winamp to launch on boot and play on
start, that is ;-).
