Usually the problem is not stupidity but rather the length of the audio 
cable on the speakers.
There might not be enough room for the box to be anywhere else but on (far) 
left
and speaker cables tend to go from computer to the right speaker and from 
there to the left speaker,
resulting in scenario where the speakers need to be swapped.
