 Yes, it uses a proprietary codec that goes very far back, to at least Fallout (it's probably property 
of Interplay). I think it's wavelet based (there's a reverse-engineered acm2wav source out there). I'm 
very familiar with the Infinity Engine data (BG1/BG2/PS:T/IWD/IWD2/etc) and they all use that codec on 
the PC for sound. 

 However, I thought it possible that the OP might have meant the Mac-port of BG1 and wanted to give him 
the chance to clarify.
