A Pentium 166 can decode beta 4 128 kbps faster than real-time.  I did it
quite often.  It uses about 35-40% CPU (inaccurate figures take from top) when
doing real-time decoding.  I currently play RC2 files on my Pentium 200
without too much trouble. (Roughly same CPU usage)  If you are doing anything
else on the box, you probably want buffering though.

I'll test lame encoding with MMX to see if it makes any difference with my
CPU.
