Exactly.
Ripping a CD can cause problems you wouldn't get if you were just listening
to it.
Fortunately for Win32 users EAC handles it nearly flawlessly and Linux users
have had the cdparanoia
package for a while now (emusic.com uses it internally to make sure all the
MP3 albums they offer for sale
are ripped at the best possible quality)

You should check out the CDParanoia FAQ. Reading an audio CD as
data, and simply playing the CD are two very different processes:
