Speed of course, though it's not very much anyway, it should be faster in
the frequency domain.

Winamp, for example, has (quiet a recent addition) a generic PCM EQ, but
the plugin interface allows (and encourages) the plugin to do the EQ
himself.  Originally only MP3 files could be equalized because this was
the only plugin that did it.
