You can do it on vinyl (I explained how a couple of days ago).
"Discrete" isn't necessarily quite the right word for how it was done
(sum of forward and rear channels in the standard "stereo" channels,
differences between forward and rear channels encoded onto a supersonic
carrier), but it's much closer to being fully discrete than the matrix
method, and "discrete" is what they called it.
