It is simply MPEG-2. Originally, MPEG-3 was the premium choice for HDTV. In 1993, though, the MPEG committee realized MPEG-3 tools were very similar to MPEG-
tools. Furthermore, dissensions between Japanese and Americans lead to abandon this format.
