This is actually quite easy to understand. There is quite a bit of
neural processing before the "sound" enters the brain, and not all
signal paths are the same length/speed. Sudden attacks in the
sound get to the brain faster than steady sounds.
There is a feedback mechanism between the brain and the ear, which
amplifies the formants of the sound. This explains concurrent masking
as well. Basically, the outer hair cells make an active feedback
mechanism.

for words like "cochlea", "hair cells", "OHC", "oto-acoustic emissions",
"octopus cells", etc.
