It's mystery meat. You don't know what's in it until you eat it. Any
file lister that does not actually check the file header (and most
don't) cannot tell you the difference between an audio or video file.
That's a mistake.
Extensions are a pretty clever way to avoid having to look at each
individual file. Three-letter-extensions have the advantage of being
short enough for manual use while offering a big enough variety of
possible combinations.

No, it's not, since programs register different icons for different
extensions.
