It most probably is, the ANSI standard has nothing like that, nor does
POSIX (AFAIK) and I don't think ISO C does (but I haven't seen it at
all).  I do seem to recall the GNU libc having extensible stream
abstraction, including pre-suplied extensions to open from/to memory.
What then, where can you find elagant generic code if no in GNU code ?-:
