Hello all:
I am very much enjoying reading this list. It's great to see discussion
(mostly readable by non-vorbis-developer types) on the potential of vorbis
and OGG in general. But I'd like to ask about the immediate future. I am
very keen to adopt OGG vorbis for a number of uses, but I am awaiting a few
things. And I do not wish to pester and hassle those hard at work to make
this all a reality, rather I'd just like some kind of idea when these
features will be implemented and in what order.
OK, if memory serves, the first thing we'll see is a more flexible encoder
with, gasp, encoding options. If I remember correctly, this should be part
of the beta 2 release. What will this initial encoder be able to do?
I think the next thing will be constant bit-rate encoding. When will this
be available and how low will it be able to go? *NOTE* when replying,
please specify whether rate referrs to mono or stereo.
The final thing i'm hanging out for is streaming of CBR content. I do
realise this will require some 3rd parties, such as say the icecast people,
to get their end of it together, but there are also the plugins for the
various players that need to support it. How far away is this likely to be
and any progress on whether OGG will be HTTP only or another format as
well?
Keep up the good work! What I've heard of OGG vorbis sounds very good and
I'm itching to use it more.
Geoff.
