Sorry to intrude, since I'm not really involved in the discussion, but
why are you guys complicating such a simple issue?
base64, JPEG image, in a tag called COVERART.
It's already implemented in a few applications. It's been the
proposal I have seen advocated more. It's already used by some users
(as pointed ou by a recent complaint in the Tremor list that their
Vorbis decoder was barfing up on files with this tag). And it's KISS,
which is perfect because the album art thingy in Vorbis is only here
to please a small audience and we shouldn't spend much time or effort
with it.
This is not to say people shouldn't discuss a new proposal for
embeding some images in Ogg for similar matters, but it wouldn't be
for Vorbis-only files, which is what the users want right now.
Following this line of thought, I would suggest mixing it all up in a
content-generic metadata like the proposed M3F or similar. Thus one
would have a video file with a bunch of covers including variants, a
bunch of information about the file, and possibly even a DVD-like
chapter menu.
And from there it would be up to one's imagination. But for Vorbis I,
base64 JPEG COVERART is just fine, IMO.
