I've thought this over a little, and now I think doing a frequency cut
(lowpass, bandpass, and highpass) then encoding them separately
wouldn't sound very nice. If you encode them separately, frequency
masking won't be apparent to the encoders.

I don't know much about DSP or perceptual coding, so take this with a
grain of salt.
