I'm not so sure about the players all converging... certainly more and more
players lpay everything, but certain players are highly specialised for one
type... usually audio... iTunes for example. I can't see it supporting video
any time in the near future... they already have quicktime.

iTunes is highly specialised for audio, which is why many people use it.
It's whole gui and operation really only makes sense for audio. The reason i
like to have a different player for audio and video is that iTunes organises
my music, and for me i listen to the same tunes all the time... it's pretty
rare that'd i'd watch a video more than once or twice or have any real
desire to keep it in a media library. Some people like that for video,
things like WMP and WinAmp do this. But for me for video... i just want to
click and play and then kill the player when i'm done. I don't leave WMP
open 24/7 like i do with iTunes.

Having different extensions gives choice... you can perefctly easily
associate the different extensions with a single player if that's how you
like to do things.
