Here's an even better idea:

We can change the file extension to ""

That way, we save lots of time typing period oh gee gee, and since our 
environment looks into the file (via a cellophane wrapper) to determine 
its type, all is well! I never used different programs to open .txt, .c, 
.ogg, .zip anyway.
