Hmmm... I don't see why a log-scale x-axis would help you.
Anyway, I tinkered a bit around this quantization issue and I came
up to some serious math formuals able to determine the optimal
quantization thresholds for a given sample distribution. (optimal
in sense that the energy of the quantized signal is *very* close
to the original. And personal experiements showed that it does not
decrease the signal-to-noise ratio that much.
I've some ideas how one could implement this modified quantization
sheme but i've nearly no experience with the reference code nor
with the C language (I've no C compiler/linux)
Therefore, my suggestion would be: I present a detailed paper of
my thoughts (how I think we can solve this HF boost issue) and you
Segher (or any other skilled person) would help to put it in
practice.
How about that ?
<p>BTW: To give you a picture who I am, what I'm doing:
- computer science student
- experience in source coding (images, video, audio)
- have implemented a vorbis decoder in java
(100% from scratch, even the MDCT/FFT, i didn't look at
the reference code once)
<p>Ghis!
