There is a master thesis available on a transform based lossless
compression scheme (German)

http://www.nue.tu-berlin.de/wer/liebchen/ltac.html

I found it a very interesting read. The method is called "Lossless
Transform Audio Coding" - or LTAC.

One problem is that it is non-trivial to determine the accuracy needed
to quantize the DCT coefficients such that the reconstruction in the
time domain does not contain a lot of errors. And these errors need
to be corrected to be lossless! However, since it is only a few values
that differ, this compresses well.
