I've never experimented with a real setup, but I'd guess this 
description is a little optimistic. Certainly the encoding makes more 
efficient use of the available channels, but I assume one would need at 
least one higher order harmonic (n=2) to achieve the same front-side 
localization at 5.1. So it doesn't really use fewer channels.

So, I'd say rather that it's a more flexible, logical and efficient 
encoding and much more appropriate in non-film applications where you 
don't have a single dominant orientation.
