Remember that QuickTime is not just for Macintosh - with a little 
care you can write your QT components once and compile for both Mac 
and Windows.

Also, you are going to have trouble writing a sound compressor (as 
opposed to decompressor or exporter) as there is an assumption that 
sound compression is fixed bitrate. When you get to this stage, let 
me know and I can help out with contacts here.
