This is same kind of problem that prompted the development of
libao.  Fortunately, someone had code already that almost did what we
wanted.  That gave us a base to start from (Woohoo for Open Source!).

Is there open source code to do this conversion that you could start
from?  Heck maybe someone already is doing this.
