[snipped Ambisonic software tools discovery]

I installed the latest ALSA driver tonight (v0.9beta6), and I was able to play
different stereo files out of the front and rear outputs simultaneously, so
there is every reason to believe it would work for 4-channel output as well.
Once libao is modified (assuming everything else works with more than two
channels), it should be possible to play back four channel files. It would
probably also be a good idea to add a feature to ogg123 that would allow
the mapping of n channels of audio to x output channels in an arbitrary
fashion so you could listen to all the channels of a file (if not necessarily
at the same time). I'm guessing this will be done post-1.0 when the rest of
the surround support is added, but sooner would be nice. :)
