What do you mean by "can't use"?  Does the encoder segfault?

I tried to reproduce your problem, but I haven't been able to cause anything
strange to occur in my build.  [Other than observing that ogg123 segfaults on
the completion of every playback.  But that doesn't seem to be unique to your
problem.]
