My point was that we don't want to drag full unicode fonts into the *spec*.

On a desktop-class system, you do want to put that complexitiy in the
decoder. Streams will benifit from universally from rendering improvements,
and there's likely OS support you can lean on.

I'd build embedded players the same way, but not everyone does. Because of
that, the common desire for exact presentation control, and the power it
offers for separate encoding of overlays, I think it's also reasonable to
allow punting directly to a raster subpicture format as well.

The proposal of included fonts strikes me as poor factorization. Pursuit of
quality or features leads either to something like mng or to a general (but
probably bad) vector graphics format. Drawing the line at some point before
feels like an arbitrary limitation. And note that it's this isn't sufficient
for unicode support; in addition to bidi you need shapers. Many languages
with 'complex' scripts are encoded phonetically, and require context-dependent
mapping from the character sequence to a group of (possibly composited) glyphs.
