It's about to get much better.  I'm finishing up the new psychoacoustics 
branch in CVS.

SDL is a very nifty looking piece of software; I have plans for it.  However, 
I need to support the native interfaces of each system.  "Up and running with 
minimum hassle" is an important concept here.  SDL doesn;t add to much to 
that, but neither does a small backend for each OS, typically only a page or 
two of code.  They're already written for Linux (OSS anyway), *BSD, Solaris 
and IRIX.
