Wierd, since it hasn't been an obvious problem with earlier version of
gcc/egcs.  Perhaps I can screw up the courage to attempt another glibc
upgrade...

"make debug" will force -D__NO_MATH_INLINES if $CC is undefined (and
there's a link cc -> gcc), but not otherwise.

A configure option (--intellectually_challenged_glibc, perhaps?) might be
a simpler answer.
