Is this really an issue nowadays? The only compilers I'm aware of that
produce better (>5% better) code (on unix systems), are the HP, Sun,
and SGI ones; and they all tend to make bad code when optimization is
on (just like gcc 2.96 |-( )
But that was not your point, of course.
