It's done this way so that different implementations can be used (i.e. for
x86, there are simple assembly versions - they don't exactly follow ALL of
the IEEE rules, but they're good enough for the purposes of vorbis - and an
order of magnitude faster, if not more).
Otherwise, this would be a good suggestion.
