Possible, yes. Patented: Don't know, haven't looked. It seems likely
there are patents on the subject as there are numerous academic
publications. They correlate.
The good news is that, although audio/DSP related patents have the
tendancy to be covering obvious techniques, they don't actually tend
to be overbroad. I'd lay money there's still a way to use this (and
it is a direction I plan to explore; multiresolution windows by band
has been in the back of my mind for a long time, and is probably going
to be in new Squish before it's in Vorbis or a Vorbis successor).
