I don't expect the need for any cross-platform tweaking until we build on
non-Gnu tools.  One of my greatest assets (and greatest liabilities) is that
few people write C more vanilla than I :-)  But I've been using GCC for so long
sometimes I forget not to use Gnu extentions.
