You need to add slideshow to the noinst_PROGRAMS line instead, in
examples/Makefile.am. You may also need to run autoreconf or
./autogen.sh.

> slideshow_CFLAGS = $(OGG_CFLAGS) $(PNG_CFLAGS)
> slideshow_LDADD = $(GETOPT_OBJS) $(LDADDENC) $(PNG_LIBS) -lm

This part looks fine.
