Currently (with the previous MJPEG-only) cameras we use custom
Knoppix-based live CD - and yes, it has Mplayer with some patches and
Live.com library for streaming support. And this is the way we are
planning to go with the new camera too. That approach helps when most
customers use the other OS.

Other idea (I discussed it here in January) is to make a videoserver that
will trascode the full resolution Ogg/Theora (that will be recorded too)
to lower resolution MJPEG versions (by decimating - maybe just DC
components only) so that low-res streams will be compatible with legacy
videomanagement software, and if all that the server will need from the
input stream is just reconstructing DC components - a single PC will
probably easily handle multiple cameras.
