Subversion has a magic switch to preserve line endings. I'll set it for these files.

It looks like automake's dist-zip isn't smart enough to do line-ending conversion. Do I gather 
correctly that this is not a problem for MSVC with the source files, only with the project files?

That is correct.  Just the .dsp and .dsw files need fixin'.
