[paranoia] problems ripping cds

I'm using a newer VIA-based desktop system here:

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8377 [KT400 AGP] Host Bridge

And I can rip just fine from either my DVD-ROM (ide-cd driver) or my CD-RW
(ide-scsi driver) in Linux 2.4.x.

I think the VIA problems that have been reported so widely were seen
with older chipsets.  But I don't know which ones specifically.... :-/
