[paranoia] Every track rip takes ~3 hours

Hi, I've had no trouble with cdparanoia on my previous machine, but since
getting a brand new machine, cd ripping has been very problematic.

The problem is that ripping each track of a cd takes several hours. I've
tried starting the ripping on different tracks on the cd, and have tried
around 15 different cds, all of different ages, some of which are brand
new and scratch free.

I've got two cd drives, a Benq CD-R/RW installed as an Atapi cdrom on
/dev/scd0 (using /dev/sg0 as the generic scsi device), and a Toshiba DVD
Rom on /dev/cdrom. The same occurs when trying to rip from either of
them. A typical progress bar looks as follows:
 (== PROGRESS == [+++!++!++!++++!+!++++++++++++!| 017116 00 ] == :^D *

Both drives function normally for all other data reading/cd playing
operations, and the CD-R/RW writes cds without a hitch.

Has anyone got any idea what the problem might be? I can provide more
verbose logs of the ripping process if that would help.

btw I'm running RedHat 7.3 on an Athlon 1800+, the whole system is only ~2
months old.

Thanks in advance,

Dave Challis
